What is Laughter Yoga and How it works?

Laughter Yoga is a unique exercise routine that combines laughter exercises with yogic breathing (known as Pranayama). Its concept is to laugh unconditionally for no reason. It was developed in 1995 by Dr Madan Kataria in India and is based on the idea that laughter has numerous health benefits. When practised intentionally, it can positively impact your mind and body.

Laughter Yoga operates on a simple yet powerful principle: Your body can’t distinguish between fake and real laughter. Whether you’re laughing for real or faking it, your body still receives the same physiological and psychological benefits.

How a Session Works
Each 1-hour Laughter Yoga session is a playful, uplifting experience designed to energize your body and calm your mind. We’ll gently ease in with warm-ups, flow into joyful laughter exercises, deepen the experience with a laughter meditation, and close with peaceful relaxation. No experience is needed—just a willingness to join in and have fun!

Laughter Yoga’s Benefits:

To get the full benefits, it is important to laugh for at least 10/15 minutes every day and laugh deeply with the belly using the diaphragm making hearty, deep laughter.

Laughter Yoga offers a range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits:

– Boost Well-Being: Laughter reduces stress and releases serotonin, endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, which improve your mood, help you feel relax and support your overall health.

– Increases Oxygen Flow: The combination of laughter and deep breathing increases oxygen flow to the brain and body, boosting energy and mental clarity, so you will feel more productive and motivated.

– Enhances Social Connection: Laughter is a universal language that fosters bonding and improves relationships.

How a Session Works

ī‚‹

Warm Up Exercises

We begin with light movements like clapping, rhythmic chanting, and deep yogic breathing to loosen up and create connection. These simple techniques prepare both body and mind for laughter by releasing tension and boosting energy. It’s a playful way to get everyone in sync and ready to laugh.

i

Laughter & Breathing Exercises

Next, we explore laughter through playful activities like role-playing, games, or mimicking everyday situations all combined with intentional laughter. These are interspersed with gentle breathing exercises to help regulate energy, keep you grounded, and deepen the laughter experience. The focus is on eye contact, childlike playfulness, and group connection, allowing laughter to grow more natural and spontaneous.



Laughter Meditation

This free-form segment invites spontaneous, deep laughter without any structure or talking. Participants sit or lie down and allow laughter to flow naturally, like a meditation in motion.

It’s a powerful release that brings you fully into the present moment.

i

Body Scan - Relaxation Activity

We end with a calming guided relaxation or yoga nidra to balance the energy and help you absorb the benefits of laughter. This quiet moment leaves you feeling centered, refreshed, and emotionally light. It’s the perfect way to close the session with peace and clarity.

How Laughter Yoga Helped Me Through Life’s Most Tender Moments.

My Laughter Yoga journey began in 2016, at a time when I was completely burnt out. I had just started a high-pressure job at a wholesaler in London, and while everything looked fine on the outside, I was struggling. Stress and exhaustion had taken over, I felt like I was running on empty.

Then I found Laughter Yoga. I didn’t know what to expect, but I gave it a try. Laughing for no reason felt odd at first, but by the end of that session, something had shifted. I felt lighter. Hopeful. Joyful.

That one hour led to so much more. I joined an intense coaching program to begin healing from the inside out, and a year later,Ā  I became certified as a Laughter Yoga Leader… Laughter Yoga wasn’t just a moment of relief, it became part of my way forward.

Years later, in April 2020, I gave birth to my first child in the middle of the Covid-19 lockdown. The world was anxious and uncertain, but I had a surprising companion: laughter. Between contractions, I laughed. And when I walked into the delivery room smiling, the midwife looked at me and said, ā€œI’ve never seen anyone enter labour laughing.ā€

That moment says everything. Laughter Yoga taught me to stay grounded, even in the most intense and emotional experiences. It reminded me that joy is always within reach, even in the middle of chaos.

Today, I’m proud to be a certified Laughter Yoga Leader, sharing this powerful practice with others. I’ve been running workshops for groups and corporate teams, helping people reconnect with joy, reduce stress, and feel better together. Seeing others experience the same spark that changed my life is a constant reminder of just how powerful laughter can be.
